The Bible - Original Text Versus Translations

The Bible - Original Text Versus Translations

The original books of the Bible were written in Hebrew (the Old Testament) and Greek (the New Testament). Parts of the books of Daniel and the Gospel of Matthew might have been originally written in Aramaic.

The Bible - Original Text Versus Translations

Many translations have been made over the years. In the early days of Christianity the Hebrew Old Testament was usually read in a Greek translation (the so-called Septuagint). As the church spread, the need for translations grew, taking the sacred text into widely accepted languages as well as local tongues. The Bible was soon translated into Latin (the language of the Roman Empire), Syriac (an Eastern Aramaic language), Coptic (Egyptian), and Arabic. By 500 AD, some estimate, scripture could already be found in more than 500 languages.

The Bible - Original Text Versus Translations

Unfortunately, translations were not always accurate and errors were made. For this reason - and also because they did not want "ordinary" people to be able to read the Bible - the (Roman) Catholic Church banned any further translations and used only a particular Latin text known as the Vulgate, which had been translated from the Greek around 600 AD. In the 1380s the first English translations were made by John Wycliffe. By 1455 the printing press was invented (Gutenberg), and mass-production capabilities made additional English versions and other language translations more readily available.

The Bible - Original Text Versus Translations

The Bible - Original Text Versus Translations

Hundreds of translations into English (estimated around 450) have been made over the years. Some of the best known are: the King James (KJV, 1611), the New International Version (NIV, 1978), the New King James (NKJV, 1982), the New American Standard Bible (NASB, 1971) and the English Standard Version (ESV, 2001). This large number of translations is usually grouped into three main categories:

Literal translations: These translate the original texts word for word into the best English equivalent words. These translations are sometimes also referred to as interlinear translations, placing the English rendering along side the original Hebrew and Greek. Although they are undoubtedly the most accurate translations, they can be difficult to read because the flow of language follows the original Hebrew and Greek, quite different from modern English. The NASB as well as the ESV are good examples of literal translations.

Dynamic equivalent translations: These translations attempt to be as literal as possible, but restructure sentences and grammar from the original language to English. They attempt to capture thought and intent of what writers wanted to say. As a result, these are more readable in English, but have a higher degree of subjective interpretation than the literal translations. These translations include the KJV, NKJV, and NIV.

Contemporary language translations: These translation paraphrase the thought and intent of the original text into contemporary English. The result is easy to read, but the text is largely a subjective interpretation of the translator. These versions, such as the well known The Message and The New Living Translation, should be approached with great care. Use them perhaps for supplementary readings, but be aware that these texts can (and often do) differ significantly from the original Bible texts.

Every translation requires interpretation. Why? Because languages do not translate one on one. That is, not every word has a unique word to match it in the other language. Also some tongues are richer in expression than English (such as Greek) or smaller in vocabulary (such as Hebrew). A translator must interpret the original meaning and find an equivalent wording, but this makes the result subject to the biases of the translator. Bottom line: interpretations differ and errors can occur. When translations differ significantly, research into the original language can help clarify the message.

To complicate things a bit, a small number of NT verses are not supported by all ancient manuscripts; this forces translators to decide which verses to incorporate. Most translators are cautious to err on the safe side and note for the reader any verse not supported by the majority of manuscripts.

As an illustration, let's look at the Lord's Prayer from Matthew 6:9-13 in the New International Version and the King James Version:

The Lord's prayer in the King James:

"After this manner therefore pray ye: 'Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.'"

Now read the Lord's prayer in the NIV:

"This, then, is how you should pray: 'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.' Apart from "old" English versus more modern English style, notice the two differences in the last verse:

"The evil one" versus "evil." The KJV asks for deliverance from "evil" while the NIV asks to deliver us from "the evil one." There is a significant difference between the two. The original Greek text actually uses an adjective with an article, making "the evil one" the only correct translation. When we pray we ask to be delivered from the evil one, not from any danger, disaster, or from the general evil of the world.

An extra sentence. Compared to the NIV, the KJV has an extra sentence at the end: "For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever, Amen." This is a good illustration of a later addition to the oldest preserved Greek manuscripts. As the NIV mentions in a footnote: "some late manuscripts: for yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen." Other verses in the NT have similar additions. None of these are of vital theological consequence, but it is important to be aware of these variations. Therefore the differences between the various English translations are not the result of differences in the extant (still in existence) ancient manuscripts, but merely the result of choices (and sometimes errors) made by the translators during the translation to English.

Joomla Site Shows Error 500 (Internal Server Error)

If you have just setup your Joomla website or if you have recently performed an upgrade and you now get an "Internal Server Error 500" when you open your web site, check this article for a possible solution of this problem.

Joomla Site Shows Error 500 (Internal Server Error)

A fresh Joomla install includes a file called .htaccess, which is located in the main folder of your Joomla installation. This file contains certain configuration settings, which may get in conflict with the current web server configuration. The result would be an Internal Server Error 500 displayed whenever you try to view your website.

You can quickly determine whether it is the .htaccess file that is causing the error by renaming it to a .htaccess (thus disabling it). Should this resolve the error, you would at least know where to look for the exact cause of the problem. It must be one of the directives within the .htaccess file, so it would only a matter of finding our which one it is and removing it (or comMenting it).

Open the .htaccess file with a plain text editor - you can edit it via the File Manager (Site ManageMent > File Manager) on your web hosting control panel. Look for this line:

Options +FollowSymLinks

If you see it, put a # in front of it, so it would look like this:

#Options +FollowSymLinks

FollowSymLinks are enabled by default, so rest assured that you don't cripple your Joomla installation in any way by disabling this directive. This should fix the Internal Server Error 500 problem. If it doesn't try commenting other directives until you find out which one is causing the problem - any of the following would cause problems: Options, phpflag, ExecCGI, FollowSymLinks, Includes.

The 5 Most Common Local Phone Bill Errors

The 5 Most Common Local Phone Bill Errors

These types of errors are commonly associated with local and long-distance calling charges. They can occur through Metering malfunctions or clerical transcription errors. Examples include:

-Double Metering (easy to identify since each call is shown twice and in complete detail)

-Charges for incomplete calls .

-Usage from a different subscriber (another easily identifiable error-charge for another individual's line number will appear on carrier bill)

#5 - Telecom Agent Errors

Agent errors continue to be a problem as more and more agents are accepting either partial or end-to-end responsibility for service segMents provided by vendors.

Agent misfeasance occurs when a supplier orders or assumes responsibility for service segMents provided by several different carriers or vendors, then fails to exercise responsibility for those services. Examples may include:

-Local lines ordered and installed by equipMent vendor or IXC. (In the event those lines are no longer needed, the agent is nowhere to be found to cancel the unused lines and services!)

-Excessive or sub-optimum facilities installed

-Promises of credits or changes that fail to materialize

Telecom billing errors will never disappear. However, even a little knowledge in what kinds of errors to look for can go a long way in reducing telecom expenses.

Fundamental Attribution Error-Basic Explanation With Some Examples

Fundamental Attribution Error-Basic Explanation With Some Examples

In a simple way, the fundaMental attribution error happens when people observe and then judge the negative actions of others. In doing so, the observer often underestimates the social pressures that cause the other person to act in such a way.

Fundamental Attribution Error-Basic Explanation With Some Examples

A good and simple example of the fundaMental attribution error can happen like this:

On a specific day to waitress is rude talking to her customers. The customers now think that she is a really bad person. What the customers don't realize is that usually most people find the waitress friendly but today the waitress is experiencing one of the hardest days in her life. Her husband just left her for another woman, and she just lost her son in a car wreck. If the customers were aware of the problemsthe waitress just had, they actually wouldn't mind her negative attitude as much considering her current state.

So the error was the customers assuming the waitress is a much worse person than she really is. Or that she is always a rude waitress.

Another example deals with young people getting in to bad habits such as smoking. It is often easy to underestimate the pressure young people go through just so they can be accepted among their peers. I have seen adults call young teens stupid for smoking at 15. The fundamental attribution error in here is this: These teens are not stupid, many of them are actually quite smart and get good grades in school. The reason they picked up smoking at such a young age was simply to be accepted by their peers whoalso smoke. This does not mean smoking is good for them, it just means there is an error of perception when an outsider judges the teen's actions. The outsider does this without taking in to account the pressures that are causing the teen to act this way.

I often thought that money and power makes people more selFish, arrogant, prideful and above others. I thought it was part of their character. I often forget to think about the pressures that society places on these people to be perfect. This pressure and demand influence the behavior of these people that I perceive negative therefore thinking it is a part of their character. I also thought that the more money people start making the harder it is to give a certain percent away. After all, it is harder to give away$ 50,000 instead of $500. From a percenTAGe point of view the two amounts are the same if the guy giving the bigger amount makes a hundred times more. I am sure for most people it is still harder to give away the bigger amount regardless of their income. You could do a lot more with $ 50,000. Therefore I always thought the more money people make the more greedy they can get. But with the fundamental attribution error, this way of thinking is wrong.

The fundamental attribution error makes a good point when we look at the bigger picture. I began to see the social pressure that today's culture places on a millionAire or a powerful leader. The idea is if you have tons of money and/or powerful, you are smarter and therefore have less weaknesses, closerto perfection. A guy who makes $ 30,000 million a year is a human being with strengths and weaknesses. Most people who make that much money realize people look up to them. Therefore they cannot show any weakness whatsoever. This can alter their actions to show pride and ignore certain class of people. They will try to hide any weakness they have because they probably get the idea that is what society demands from them. The reality is, many millionAires and powerful political leaders have financial or leadership success, but they have so many flaws in other areas of their lives. This means they all have problems and weaknesses like everyone else. The only difference is these leaders have a pressure to be perfect because of their position.

Here is another example of thefundamental attribution error personally in my life.

In my first two years of college, there was a student, he had long hair, he was wearing a black trench coat all the time and would never take off his Sunglasses even indoors. Very few people would socialize with him. Even though I first saw him as weird, I thought the people in the class were jerks for not socializing with him. I gave him rides home because he didn't have a car. We kind of became school buddies and after I got to know him, in my opinion he was the coolest guy in the class. When looking at the Fundamental Attribution I don't think the other people in the class were jerks. I see that social influence pressured them not to associate with people who didn't look like them, who were not part of their"norm". It wasn't cool for them to associate with someone who looked like they just walked off Jerry Springer show.

Things are not what they seem, and the fundamental attribution error points that out in a very scientific way if you do more research on it.

Job Applications-How to Write Effective Selection Criteria Statements

Selection Criteria are stateMents that employers, particularly governMent agencies request Job seekers submit with their applications to demonstrate the scope and depth of their skills, experience and knowledge in relation to a specific personal attribute or competency. Listed below are examples of typical selection criteria:

Tertiary qualification in a relevant field, or equivalent experience Proven track record in contract manageMent and administration Demonstrated experience in budget management and reporting Ability to work in a high performance team Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills conducive to respectful dealings (including active listening) with colleagues, board executives, managers and direct reports.

A three part structure isrecommended for selection criteria responses-Positive Opening, Scoping Statement and 2 or more Examples.

The benefits of using this strategy includes
being a guide for Job applicants to include all the best and most relevant information from their work history relating to a specific skill recommending the best structure, presentation and format for each section, and providing a practical tool to generate the most concise, effective, comprehensive and supported statement of competency or skill guaranteed to impress any employer.

NOTE: Many employers restrict the length of selection criteria responses to a page, or sometimes specify 250, 500, or 800 100 word or equivalent character limits. Always check the enTire Application Information Package ' to seewhether there is a restriction before you start composing your responses. However, for the first drafts ignore this requirement, it only becomes important during the editing phase. All energy for the first draft should be focussed on creating and generating ideas for content. Direct your critical internal editor to take an extended coffee break until summoned.

POSITIVE OPENING
The first one or two sentences of your selection criteria response should be a positive statement that immediately links you with the desired skill, experience or knowledge. If you have been acknowledged for past performance, this is your opportunity to show perspective employers how you have used the targeted skill in a work situation to achieve good results.

OpeningExamples
Teamwork-For the last 10-years my role as a Team Leader has required me to work collaboratively and productively with multi-disciplinary teams to produce project deliverables on time and within budget. This has enhanced our company's reputation for being a market leader in project management. Client Service Delivery -My experience in client services has involved both face-to-face and call centre work environments across a number of industries including telecommunications, hospitality, insurance and banking. My employers have acknowledged my competencies and results through multiple Client Service awards recognising both individual and team performances. Organisation -The majority of my employment has required using my organising and prioritisingskills to manage large volumes of work with competing critical deadlines in order to meet strict compliance requirements as well as client imperatives. Financial Management Reporting -The aim of all financial management reporting is to be confident that the output is comprehensive and clearly indicates the financial situation of the organization and its component functional/operation units. I have consistently been able to deliver financial management reports on that have been fully aligned with each of my employing organisation's strategic goals, amply supported with evidence that either validates current initiatives or provides recommendations for a commercially viable way forward.
SCOPING STATEMENT
A scoping statement teases out the components of eachskill area, providing an overview designed to demonstrate to employers you understand the dimensions of each attribute, preferably supported with short examples. This section should be no more than one or two paragraphs in length. It can be formatted either in dot point form or as a statement and may contain the following information
a list of skill types e.g.communication types include interpersonal, presentation, liaison, negotiation, written, etc. a competency listing, e.g. demonstrate functions you routinely use in MS Word, such as create table of contents, bibliographies, flow and organisational charts, mail merge, etc. an outline of your method, process, procedures, ' how to approach or way of doing something e.g. problem solving, handling clientinquiries or managing a poorly performing team member.
Scoping Examples
Meet Deadlines -I use a series of ' To Do ' lists which is constantly reprioritized throughout the day as circumstances, operational and service demands change. I use a diary and/or desktop Computer system to track daily, weekly, monthly and longer term tasks, plans and projects. I generally use periodic check lists to ensure certain tasks are completed on time. In addition, I maintain a neat and tidy desk area and make full use of lists, information retrieval systems, document trays and folders to organize my physical environment. Accuracy and Attention to Detail -With over 4-years experience in managing data collections I have developed a keen eye, proven strategies and a methodicalapproach that enables me to readily detect information and data anomalies. In spreadsheets I always cross reference my calculations to ensure that the rows and the columns of a set of figures verify the same total figures. I employ in every spreadsheet self checking mechanisms that will highlight errors the moment that a stray finger makes them. Clear and Concise Written Communication Style -My experience in written communication extends to targeting specific groups across different audiences-clients, team members, supervisors, committees and professionals. I take great pride that all my documents are factual, easy to read, grammatically correct, error free and professionally presented. I have extensive experience in generating business correspondence as well asperforming on a daily basis a wide range of document tasks such as writing, drafting, collaborating with, contributing to and editing policies, procedures, proposals, business cases, project management plans, marketing collateral, data collection forms, surveys and newsletters. Experience in using Spreadsheets -On a daily basis I use MS Excel for recording, analysing and generating reports. I am highly proficient in importing data into and out of Excel spreadsheets. I am able to generate graphs, simple front end forms, paste-link functions, and many of the data manipulation (transcribe) and statistical functions (sum, average). My proficiencies extend to presentation and printing of Excel worksheets to facilitate the ease of reading and interpretation of data. Any work thatrequires comparative analysis on costings for venues and set up of budgets, as well as the monitoring of expenses is performed in MS Excel.
RELEVANT EMPLOYMENT EXAMPLES
The last and most critical section of a selection criteria response is to provide at least two examples from your work history to demonstrate where and how you have used the desired skill in a work situation to achieve an intended outcome. My recommendation is to take 2 or 3 positions from your work history, using a company name as the header and provide your experience in a narrative style, and include who, what, where, when, how and why "along with a statement of achievement. The examples should be written so they create a picture in the mind of the reader, thereby overcoming any impedimentassociated with prospective employers ' lack of familiarity regarding your industry, company, position, project, role responsibilities, activities or discrete tasks.

Employment Examples

Company To Since July 2008 as the Accounting Manager my role has been to receipt and review all processes and systems leading to the monthly consolidation of the company's Group accounts. A key accountability is to ensure a strict adherence to financial data accuracy, consistency in treatment of accounts and reporting standards across numerous projects administered by multiple financial reporting units and involving billions of Dollars. I use a number of comparative methodologies to verify accuracy and completeness of submitted accounts before consolidating them into financial Groupstatements. My role requires demonstrating leadership and the training of financial and accounting staff at head office and subsidiary offices to ensure they deliver their components of key strategic financial Group reports by the scheduled due dates. Our dynamic and highly competitive business environment often requires the Board and Executive Management to request a specific configuration of the Group's financial data in order to provide information that comprehensively guides, directs and supports strategic planning initiatives. A significant challenge for special reports is to ensure expenses and revenues correctly relate to their associated activities, receive the same consistent treatment and are aligned with the organisation's budget forecast to ensure comparability.
Company B As a Clinic Booking Officer in the 2009 National Oral Health Survey Project, performed in a high volume, pressured and deadline dependent work environment. My role required the planning, organising and scheduling of dental examination clinics for six teams operating across the state. Each team was required to handle up to 30 patients for examination day. My tasks included contacting patients to secure a minimum number of appointments before confirming no later than two weeks prior that a scheduled clinic day was approved to go ahead. For the duration of the 3-month project, not only did I achieve the target for every booking scheduled clinic (no clinic was cancelled), but my contribution leads to our state being acknowledged as the project's Best Performer for thehighest service volume and the quality of results.

Even for a professional writing selection criteria responses can be hard work. It is strongly recommended that the moment you identify a position requiring preparation of selection criteria you START IMMEDIATELY by quickly setting up a draft document using the selection criteria as headings and subheading titles of temporary ' Opening ', ' Scope ' and ' Examples ' to guide you in the initial placement of content. In the first few sessions concentrated only on setting up the framework and filling in with rough notes or outlines of suitable information as it comes to mind. Strive to stay creative and avoid going into edit mode. You will have plenty to editing to do as the application deadline draws closer.

The Greek civilization is considered by historians as the first one in the history of mankind. A study of their archeological remains confirms that the ancient Greeks were a highly developed community. Their lifestyle and inventions contained a high sense of order and aesthetics.

Ancient Greece

The ancient Greeks built houses along the shores of the land. They were dependent on the Aegean seas for their Food Supplies and other trade. Traveling brought them into contact with other cultures. They gained exposure to various agricultural methods and different types of metal work.

Different communities arose from the ancient Greece civilization. Some of them were the Achaeans and the Aegean Pelasgians. Crete was the center of the Aegean civilization and was the dominant community in 2500BC. The Achaeans made Mycenae their capital. A volcano caused the destruction of the Aegean community around 1400bc. The Mycenaeans absorbed the culture of the Mainland community.

In course of time, Greek settleMents were transformed into city states or States and each city-state was ruled by a king. The governMent was usually unstable due to the tyranny of the aristocrats. Democracy was hardly ever practiced.

The ancient Greeks were very keen on sports. The great athletic contest called the Olympic games began in 776 BC, which marked the beginning of the rise of the Greek civilization. At that point of time, Greek ideas were greatly influenced by many different foreign cultures. Artists were focusing on recreating human figures of mythology. The civilization saw its zenitharound 500 BC. Excellence was seen in the fields of philosophy, art and literature. Wars with other civilizations began in 490 BC and the superior Greek armies overran their opponents to establish their supremacy. The ancient age of Greek civilization saw the birth of great philosophers like Socrates, Pluto, and the great emperor, Alexander.

The ancient Greeks were pagan. They prayed to the various elements of nature. They believed that favorable climate and good crops occurred when the gods were pleased. When things turned bad, they attributed it to the wrath of the gods. They performed sacrifices to appease the enraged gods.

Ancient Greeks were essentially simple-minded folks who left behind a beautiful legacy of art, philosophy and literature.

Joomla Mod Rewrite & 500 Errors - Problems and Solutions

Joomla Mod Rewrite & 500 Errors - Problems and Solutions

The time always comes in a web developer's life when they are working on a redesign or upgrade of an existing site. This is generally a more rewarding project, as the knowledge gleaned from the lifespan of the existing site provides much valuable information for the new developMent. This is also a double edged sword as we must also be careful not to upset our existing search engine visibility and all old pages must be redirected to new pages.

This is achieved through the use redirection and issuing the HTTP 301 status code which indicates the resource has moved permanently.

URL Rewriting with Joomla!

If you are moving to a Joomla! site or simply updating the structure of an existing Joomla installation then you will need to dive into the murky world of URL rewriting with .htaccess. Things are a little more tricky if you are using Joomlas search engine friendly URL system as you have to be careful not to upset any of the existing rules so knowing what you are doing can (and will) save you a whole bunch of headaches.

If you are not using the URL rewriting system in Joomla! then you will need to add a .htaccess file and simply add your mod rewrite rules. If you are looking to add rules to an existing Joomla .htaccess file then you will need to be a little more careful.

Adding Rewrite Rules to Joomla .htaccess

The Joomla.htaccess file is clearly marked up showing three distinct areas. You want to place your rules after the block that is comMented as 'Rewrite rules to block out some common exploits' and before the block that is comMented 'Begin - Joomla! core SEF Section'.

The following shows where are new rules are to go, the exact text may be slightly different or there may be additional comMents but this should help you identify correct place to add your new rules.

########## End - Rewrite rules to block out some common exploits

########### new rules go here

# rewrite oldpage1.html to site root

rewriterule ^oldpage1\.html$ / [R=301,L]

# rewrite oldpage2.html to newpage.html

rewriterule ^oldd-page.html /newpage.html [R=301,L]

########### new rules end here

########## Begin - Joomla! core SEF Section

Common Problems - Joomla 500 Error

There are lots of other.htaccess problems that can generate the dreaded 500 internal server error. Things vary between different web server configurations so there are no concrete answers but the following are some of the most common problems and solutions.

1. Options +FollowSymLinks

Try adding or removing this line

2. RewriteBase /

If you rules are causing problems, try adding or removing 'RewriteBase /'

3. L = Last Rule

Always make sure your 301 rewrites include the optional L flag ([R=301,L]) to indicate that this is the last rule.

On a more general note, if you have problems then comment your rewrite rules, un-comment them one at a time and test till you find the culprit. Nine times out of ten you will find that your problem lies in small error in the syntax or at the very least by identifying the exact problem you can request or search for targeted help.

Better now?

Mod Rewrite is a powerful tool but the syntax can be confusing and troublesome for casual users. Combine that with the general purpose 500 internal server error and you have a recipe for confusion and lost time.
